Tassie Cameron reveals what to expect in Season 3 of ‘Rookie Blue’
Rookie Blue is quickly becoming the little summer series that could. The Canadian co-production, which returns Thursday night to Global and ABC, has retained solid Thursday night ratings for the past two seasons and, in its Season 3 premiere, even attracted the likes of William Shatner.
In gearing up for the big debut, TV Guide Canada sat down with executive producer Tassie Cameron, who teased us on a big Dov storyline, Gail’s new love interest, Traci’s big promotion, and the fact that everyone should be “careful what they wish for.”
TVGuide.ca: How would you sum up Season 3?
Tassie Cameron: To sum it up in a nutshell, be careful what you wish. If Season 1 was ‘fake it ‘til you make it,’ Season 2 was ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing,’ and Season 3 I think we’ve been exploring that idea.
TVG: At the end of Season 2, Andy (Missy Peregrym) and Sam (Ben Bass) finally gave into their relationship. How much thought went into the timing of that, and the aforementioned consequences?
TC: We thought really long and hard about when to do it and how to do it, and I don’t know. I guess we’ll see if it’s a mistake as you guys watch Season 3, but we felt that to extend that any longer was starting to feel a little false. We thought, let’s put these two together and see what being a police officer and doing this job and being together in a stressful, tense life does to a couple that’s finally got what they wanted, which was each other.
TVG: So what’s the status of their relationship when we return?
TC: In the first episode it’s a little more complicated than just they’ve been happily together. We wanted to start with that and see where it took us. I think they’re both equally into their jobs, I think they have very, very different ways of doing them. That’s what will cause conflict between them in Season 3. Andy is a follower and a good girl and an A student, and Swarek’s a bad boy rule breaker, does things his own way, takes short cuts, I think they’ve got very different approaches to the job but they’re both excellent police officers.
We didn’t want to spend too much time reliving the end of Season 2, if there’s too much back story it can be dull for the viewers who are watching it or haven’t watched it.
TVG: How much time has passed since the suspension?
TC: We pick up three months after the suspension. We don’t talk too much about it, but Sam will definitely see some consequences to his methods.
TVG: Where does that leave Luke (Eric Johnson)? Will he return?
TC: Luke is coming back to Season 3 but not right off the top. We’ve done this love triangle now for two seasons, let’s give him a bit of a break and then he can come in at the time we need him, when you’re kind of wondering where he is and what he would do in this situation, there he is.
