I've just finished the book,Of Human Bondage, which is written by one of my favorite writers, W.Somerset Maugham.
I read the Chinese version of this book two years ago, which firmly attracted me and impressed me deeply. Reading the original edition is completely another kind of feeling. With these vivid descriptions, I can imagine the hero, Philip and all his sufferings.
Of Human Bondage is a novel of a young man's education similar to David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens. This kind of novel is the formation of a young man's character through education, travels, and early love experiences.
As in Of human Bondage, the hero Philip lost both of his parents when he was very young and must go through a humiliating experience. Even though he had a club foot which brought him so much misery, he still pursued his dreams devotedly. But sometimes he was confused and wandering in this indifferent society, who seems to be the epitome of tens of thousands of young people, including you and me. There was inner contradictions and confusion, struggling in the dream and reality, at a loss. None of us can join vision and realism so as to find the power of positive realism.
Even though Philip can't escape from the heavy bondage of his trapped soul, he still believes in the freedom of humanity, just like Gatsby believes in the green light.
