La La Land is a 2016 American musical romantic drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle, and starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Released on December 9th, 2016, the film got good word of mouth, and was nominated for the 74th Golden Globe Awards.
　　It depicts a nameless actress Mia comes across a struggling jazz pianist Sebastian in Los Angeles. Despite that both of them are ambitious, they are trapped into the reality. Appreciating each other, they fall in love and encourage one another. There is a period of delighted time they spend together.
　　However, in order to lead a better life, Sebastian joins into a pop band, and becomes a super star who receives numerous cheer and applause from audience. Mia suspects that he has forgotten his initial dream. Meanwhile, the drama which directs and acts by Mia’s own is unfulfilling. Depressed and annoyed, Mia decides to give up her dream as well as the love between Sebastian and her.
　　Five years later, Mia has become an outstanding actress. After marrying with another male, she has a baby and lives an affluent life. She meets Sebastian again accidently. Recalling those cherished memories, they smile to each other.

　　In my opinion, La La Land is exactly a simple love story, but it is touching. What attracts me most is the ending. When almost everyone expecting two characters can share their whole life together, Mia and Sebastian separate and lead their own life. The ending poses a question that worth considering, is it just a perfect outcome nice? I think the answer is not. Although Sebastian is not the person who can company Mia until the end, he is always by her side in Mia’s most tough time. To Mia, even if Sebastian is not her ‘lover’, he is still an important individual who can never be replaced. Through our whole life, we can meet all kinds of people. It is separation that makes us comprehend the meaning of ‘cherish’, and it is because everything and everyone will change sooner or later, the memories are so precious. Is it not an important thing to everyone?
　　As for the characters, Mia and Sebastian have their own dream. To make their dreams come true, they really pay their all mental and physical efforts and ignore those who don’t understand and laugh at them. The plot reminded me a ridiculous dream I had in my childhood. Perhaps everyone owned an unpractical dream when we were children, but little by little, we have known the cruelty of the society, and then, most of us gave up. What’s more, laughing at those minority who unwilling to give up as a matter of course. However, if you have really decided to empty all your life to accomplish that pure and laughable dream, it is not important how other people think.

　　The whole movie creates an elegant and relaxing atmosphere. Many screens, for example, Mia and Sebastian dance under the starry sky, they play the piano together and so on, make audience comfort. Trough all these pictures, we can feel the deep love between Mia and Sebastian. The only shortcoming the movie has I think is that it lack of some mental narration. Such as the reason why two characters turn to lovers from two strangers, the entanglement Mia has to choose whether join in the audition etc.
　　As a musical film, La La Land includes a great number of original songs, which can provide audience a sense of substitution. What impressed me most is the song ‘City of stars’, it is the song that Sebastian plays when he and Mia meet at the last. They recalled the first time when they met, those details they experienced together, and those times when they fought for their dreams.
　　In a word, I think the movie tells a story about the prettiest love and the purest dream. It is a simple love story which can touch you deeply.
