It is argued that while learning a foreign language, we should place equale mphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing. I tend to disagree as certain skills might carry more weighting given the purpose of language study.
I have to acknowledge that the four skills carry equal weighting for some language learners, particularly full-time students who aim to master a foreign language to excel academically. This is because the four skills, rather than being mutually exclusive, are interrelated, which means if a student is poor at one aspect, say listening, chances are that they would similarly demonstrate subpar performance in speaking, as only when they comprehend others well can they provide meaningful responses. This calls for the need for them to attach equal importance to all the components of a language. Another reason is that curricula designed by schools, which often incorporate language study covering every one of the four sections, aim to boost students’ language skills comprehensively. In this case, if students focus on certain skills instead of all four, they may flunk some tests or exams, which exerts pernicious effects on their academic records.
