O, call not me to justify the wrong
1 Do not force me to explain why you have wronged me.
That thy unkindness lays upon my heart;
2 I have to say your unkindness has hurt my heart.
Wound me not with thine eye but with thy tongue;
3 Although you can hurt me with words, please don't stop looking at me.
Use power with power and slay me not by art.
4 You can kill me directly with your power but do not use indirect skills by turning your eyes away.
Tell me thou lovest elsewhere, but in my sight,
5 You can tell me you have other lovers, but when we are together, don't close your eyes.
Dear heart, forbear to glance thine eye aside:
6 Darling, more control your eyes and don't look elsewhere.
What need'st thou wound with cunning when thy might
7 Why do you need to wound me in this way?
Is more than my o'er-press'd defense can bide?
8 Why turn your eyes away when your power is greater than I can resist?
Let me excuse thee: ah! my love well knows
9 Oh, let me try to explain why.
Her pretty looks have been mine enemies,
10 Because you know that your sexy looks are killing weapons.
And therefore from my face she turns my foes,
11 And so you turn your eyes away not to hurt me.
That they elsewhere might dart their injuries:
12 In this way your eyes will hurt someone else.
Yet do not so; but since l am near slain,
13 I plead you not to do so, since I am already nearly killed by your other ways.
Kill me outright with looks and rid my pain.
14 Please kill me right now and stop my suffering.
