這一节有两句理解得不太到位,導致有些理解上的模糊~ It hadn’t pulled up before she shot out of the hall door and into it. pull up的意思這裏是停車,大概以前馬車用拉着馬停下来的所以叫pull up. 這句話是説Irene跑得很快衝進馬車,車都還没停下。在這裏我一時沒有理解到Irene已経上了車了,反正有点繞的感覚~現在是明白了。 I was just balancing whether I should run for it, or whether I should perch behind her landau when a cab came through the street. 還有這一句,直訳的話是“我正在衡量是否要追上它,或者是否躲在她的馬車後面,当一輛車走到街上。”或 “当一輛車走到街上,我正在衡量是否要追上它,或者是否躲在她的馬車後面”。 這裏的when用中文可能理解為“這時”好一点。 “我正在衡量是否要追上它,或者是否躲在她的馬車後面。這時,一輛車走進街上。” 這種情況不知普不普遍,不過有時好像確実要這麼理解。
還有两句: By the way, Doctor, I shall want your coöperation. 這裏的“coöperation”是有音符的,現代英語已経省略的。這個ö的意思是,它与前面的o不連在一起发音。 I think, perhaps, it is almost time that I prepare for the new rôle I have to play.” 這裏的rôle,上面的音符有甚麼作用,問了某GPT,它説是代表了随後的s被省略了。這種詞应該一般来自法語。 它舉了一個有趣的例子: hospital是英文,対応的法文是hôpital。就是hospital傳入英語的時候還是有s的,但後來法語自己省音了,把s省略了,o寫為ô。這樣看來這個詞寫法上都是英文存古一點了。
還有學到兩句: This was quite too good to lose, Watson. 這裡的good不能理解為“好的”,它的意思要理解為 a good deal 裡面的 good. 因此這裡理解出錯的話差別就很大了。 In the phrase "a good deal," the word "good" is used as an adverb to describe the extent or degree of something. It means "a considerable amount" or "a significant quantity." It's often used to indicate that there is a notable or substantial amount of something, whether it's a physical quantity, an action, or a condition. At his fall the guardsmen took to their heels in one direction and the loungers in the other, while a number of better-dressed people, who had watched the scuffle without taking part in it,crowded in to help the lady and to attend to the injured man. 這句相對來講簡單,不過這裡的take to their heels, 意思是flee quickly。又學到了一個heel的用法,記錄一下~ "take to their heels" is an idiomatic expression that means to flee or run away quickly. When someone takes to their heels, they are making a hasty escape, often out of fear or to avoid a situation. In the context of the sentence, the guardsmen quickly ran away in one direction.
另外有一句話,84版字幕組翻譯對了,群眾版翻譯錯了,我當時看書的時候也是理解出錯,導致讀起來不太流暢。 The driver looked twice at such a shabby fare. 群眾版的翻譯是:“趕車人對那菲薄的車費瞧了又瞧”。一開始我對fare也是這樣理解為費用的,但這句話真的這樣翻譯的話,跟上下文讀起來就是很難理解。因為這時Holmes還沒跟車夫講價錢。 這裡的fare指的是passenger, someone who pays to be driven somewhere in a cab. 也就是說,他的大概意思是,司機對這個衣着破旧的乘客看了又看。這裡84版的字幕組就翻譯對了,而某gpt也很厲害憑這一句話就知道這個意思。群眾版不夠老道。
